A statement from the Vito Fazzi hospital in Lecce confirmed he underwent several CT scans, which showed “no internal lesions” to the cranium, neck or torso.

As he was unconscious for a period, he will be kept under observation in the neurological ward for at least 24 hours.

He was visited by Ascoli player Giacomo Beretta, who was involved in the accidental collision.

The shocking incident occurred just five seconds into Friday night’s game against Ascoli, as there was an accidental clash of heads mid-air and he seemed unconscious before he landed very heavily on the ground.

Medics rushed on to the pitch and seemed to be performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation before the ambulance arrived.

On the request of both teams, the match was abandoned and will be rescheduled at a later date.
