Rafael Leao may be a star for Milan but could only watch on in horror as Portugal were eliminated by Morocco at the World Cup.

The 23-year-old forward has been a key figure for Stefano Pioli and the Rossoneri this season, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists in 20 appearances across all competitions, but he was hardly given a chance by Fernando Santos at the World Cup in Qatar.

Leao did not start in any of Portugal’s five matches and was only brought on for the final 20 minutes of their decisive defeat to Morocco.

The Italian press were sympathetic with Leao following Portugal’s elimination from the World Cup. Tuttosport highlighted his lack of chances, noting: “He should’ve gone on earlier, but he had no blood in his eyes.”

La Gazzetta dello Sport echoed this sentiment, frustrated with his lack of usage in Qatar, saying: “He has a reputation as a match-breaker, but he shouldn’t only come on at the end.”

The 23-year-old Leao only has around 18 months left on his contract with Milan and the club are working hard to agree a new deal with their star forward. Chelsea are keeping a close eye on the situation, keen to try and snap him up in the coming months.

Leao’s ratings in the Italian newspapers:

La Gazzetta dello Sport: 6.5

Corriere dello Sport: 6

Corriere della Sera: 6

Tuttosport: 5.5

  1. Overshadowed by the controversy and ego of an over-the-hill mega star. If CR7 had any dignity he would hang his boots up now or go to Saudi Arabia.

  2. Well, he’s a handfull if he has already started hus run, otherwise if he’s pressed upon recieving the ball he can be limited out of the match! Thua guy needs spaces to do his magic!
