It was only his second ever Italy cap, after the Nations League defeat to Portugal in September 2018.

“I had missed the Nazionale a great deal, as international duty is the ultimate joy for any player,” Lazzari told RAI Sport.

“It was magnificent being able to play this evening, as we had fun on the field and I hope we entertained those watching it too. Since I was last here, the Italy squad has really grown together and there’s this great alchemy between the players.”

It has been suggested that Lazzari was left out for so long because he does better in a five-man midfield than he does a four-man defence.

“It’s natural considering I’ve been playing in a five for so many years at club level, training in that system every day, so someone who does train in a four all the time will have the advantage.

“All I can do is give my best for Lazio and then try to earn my place in the side.”
