Maurizio Sarri has won the Serie A Coach of the Month award for March, rewarding him for Lazio’s wins over Napoli and Roma.

The Biancocelesti picked up seven points from a possible nine in March, edging out a 1-0 win away to league leaders Napoli, being held to a 0-0 draw by Bologna and securing a fiery 1-0 victory over Roma in the ever-tense Derby della Capitale.

The prize was awarded by a panel of judges, composed of the editors of sports newspapers, who evaluated the coaches based on technical-sporting criteria and the quality on play seen on the pitch. Matchdays 25, 26 and 27 were taken into consideration.

Lega Serie A CEO Luigi De Siervo discussed Sarri’s work at Lazio and why he deserved to win the Coach of the Month award.

“In his second year on the Lazio bench, Maurizio Sarri is confirming himself as a great football maestro.

“The Biancocelesti, second in the table, are the result of the dictates of the Tuscan coach, who has moulded a team that combines great offensive quality with an excellent defensive organisation, as demonstrated by the highest number of clean sheets in Serie A.

“The successes in March in the derby of Rome and away to Napoli certify the great work done by Sarri and his ability to obtain results always through good play.”

Lazio currently sit second in the Serie A table, 19 points behind league leaders Napoli and five points ahead of fifth place Roma.

The Biancocelesti are desperate to secure a Champions League finish as they look to continue building Sarri’s project in the Italian capital.
