Lazio missed a good chance to overtake Roma and climb into third place on Monday, when they could only draw away at Verona. Maurizio Sarri may complain about some of the refereeing decisions on the night but his side were, once again, complacent in the second half.
Now the Biancocelesti must raise themselves for the visit of Atalanta, another club desperately seeking points to catapult them into the top four. This is sure to be a very close game and it would not be a surprise if it did end up all square.
Sarri will be hoping that home advantage will count for something on Saturday, but his team has only won of the last three at the Stadio Olimpico, drawing against both Empoli and Fiorentina. The thrashing of Milan in between those games just proves how frustrating this season has been for Lazio fans.
Atalanta are enduring a curious season of their own though. A good start to the campaign crashed down just before the winter break, with four defeats in their last five games of 2022. Although results have been a little better since the restart, a disappointing defeat away at Sassuolo last weekend leaves La Dea outside the Champions League places.
Gian Piero Gasperini will also have to make do without both Joakim Mælhe and Luis Muriel for this trip to the Eternal City. They both received red cards in that defeat at Sassuolo and Atalanta will need to call on all their resources to come away with a positive result on Saturday evening.
A positive is the form of Ademola Lookman though. The Nigeria international has found the net in three of the last four games and is the club’s leading goalscorer. He also takes penalties, so seems a good choice to score anytime against Lazio.
