However, Mainz broke the deadlock when Yoshinori Muto caught the Lazio defence napping down the right and set up Yunus Malli for an inevitable tap-in.

Loris Karius was decisive to prevent Klose nodding in a Felipe Anderson cross on the stroke of half-time.

Stefano Pioli only made two changes at the break, but the game went downhill fast. Christian Clemens crossed from the left for Jairo Samperio, who scored with the aid of a deflection off Mauricio.

Pierre Bengtsson blasted over from close range and Lucas Biglia made his pre-season debut, immediately firing inches wide from outside the penalty area.

The Lazio defence was utterly static on the third goal, which saw Bengtsson set up Clemens to tap in off his thigh.
