Lazio director Angelo Fabiani confirms Luigi Sepe will have his medical tomorrow, they are open to Leonardo Bonucci and Matteo Guendouzi, while coach Maurizio Sarri did ask for Domenico Berardi and Piotr Zielinski.
The press conference was to present the club’s new summer signings, Daichi Kamada, Gustav Isaksen and Taty Castellanos.
However, much of the attention was focused on the words spoken by director of sport Fabiani, who confirmed the new goalkeeper will be brought in tomorrow.
Attempts to sign Hugo Lloris from Tottenham Hotspur have been abandoned, as instead they will sign Salernitana’s understudy Sepe.
“There are no regrets on the players who didn’t come, because nobody said ‘no’ to Lazio. Sepe will have his medical on Friday,” said Fabiani.
The director was also asked about the reports coach Sarri had specifically requested some players, namely a reunion with Napoli midfielder Zielinski and the arrival of Berardi from Sassuolo.
“Berardi and Zielinski were players indicated by our coach, but those operations were not completed,” confirmed Fabiani.
“We decided to look elsewhere and try to lower the average age of the squad. Zielinski and Berardi were evaluated, but then we made different choices. A formal offer was made to Napoli and we received no response, so we left it.”
Lazio need more reinforcements after qualifying for the Champions League, especially following the disappointing 2-1 defeat away to Lecce that opened the Serie A season.
Among the candidates they could go for are veteran defender Bonucci, who is frozen out at Juventus.
“Bonucci has an extraordinary career behind him, we did what we needed to, but the transfer market is still open and we will see.”
Another option is former Arsenal midfielder Guendouzi, who was sold to Olympique Marseille for €11m last summer.
“We are in the reflection phase. If there are some exits, then there will be players coming in, but as things stand, we are happy with the squad.”
It is likely that Guendouzi would be brought in if Toma Basic found a buyer.
