Vincenzo D’Amico, who was a part of Lazio’s Scudetto winning squad in the 1973-74 season, has announced his cancer diagnosis.

A Lazio youth product, the former midfielder spent 12 years total with the Biancocelesti across two spells in the 1970s and 1980s, being a hard-working midfielder. He also spent time with Torino and Ternana before hanging up his boots in 1988.

After hanging up his boots, D’Amico briefly worked as a coach at amateur level before beginning a long career as a pundit for Italian state broadcaster RAI.

The 68-year-old D’Amico announced on Facebook on Saturday that he’d been diagnosed with cancer, posting a short but painful message saying: “They tell me that cancer patients bring out unexpected strengths! I am trying.”

An outpouring of support has already arrived from Lazio fans and others who’ve enjoyed his punditry over the last few decades.

Interestingly, D’Amico scored the last ever goal for the New York Cosmos, featuring for the American outfit in a 2-1 friendly loss to Lazio in 1985.
