Luis Maximiano played just six minutes in the Lazio jersey, was sent off and never got back into the team, so the €10m investment could be loaned out in January.

The 23-year-old Portuguese talent was brought in at great expense over the summer following the exits as free agents of both Thomas Strakosha and Pepe Reina when their contracts expired.

Signed from Granada at a cost of €10.1m, Luis Maximiano made his one and so far only appearance for the Aquile in the opening Serie A game of the season against Bologna on August 14.

That lasted precisely six minutes, which was long enough for him to rush outside the penalty area and clumsily handle the ball.

It was an automatic red card offence and even after the one-match ban had expired, he never got his place back from Ivan Provedel, in Serie A or the Europa League.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the transfer has already been deemed a total failure and Lazio are trying to find a new club for him in January.

His contract runs to June 2027 and recouping the €10m investment would be difficult, so they hope he can rediscover some form on loan.
