Lazio midfielder Danilo Cataldi has been given a one-match ban after insulting the referee using ‘a blasphemous phrase’ in the tunnel.

The incident occurred after the final whistle of their 2-1 defeat to Napoli at the Stadio Olimpico.

A statement from the disciplinary commission confirms Cataldi accosted the referee in the tunnel on the way to the locker rooms, angrily protesting a decision and using a blasphemous phrase.

In the Italian language, blasphemy is the very worst kind of swearing and abuse.

That means Cataldi is suspended against Hellas Verona and will return for the game with Cremonese.

Lazio were also fined €10,000 after their fans on three occasions made ‘territorial discrimination’ chants against the Neapolitan section of the crowd.

Spezia were fined €10,000 for an insulting chant and Milan fined €5,000 after some of their supporters threw three plastic bottles onto the pitch during the 3-2 victory over rivals Inter at San Siro.
