Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio are reportedly in advanced negotiations with Arsenal for Uruguay international midfielder Lucas Torreira.

The 25-year-old spent most of his career in Italy with Pescara and Sampdoria before moving to Arsenal for €29m in 2018.

He struggled to settle in England and had a loan spell with Atletico Madrid last season, but remains determined to leave London.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Lazio could well bring in Torreira on loan with an option to buy at the end of the season.

They have long been linked with Torreira, who would suit Sarri’s 4-3-3 formation, and he is more than happy to come back to Italy.

The Uruguay international has a Spanish passport, so will not take up a precious non-EU slot in the squad.

However, before Lazio can make any new signings, they either need President Claudio Lotito to step in with a fresh cash injection or finally get some of their players sold.

The ones on the way out are Joaquin Correa, wanted by Inter and Arsenal at €30m, and Olympique Marseille target Gonzalo Escalante.
