Former Lazio striker Hernan Crespo believes the Biancoceleste have the right attitude to qualify for the Champions League next season.

The Argentine, who is now Coach of the Parma Primavera side, pointed to the Aquile’s fixtures as evidence that they have control over the outcome of their season.

“Lazio and Napoli have more enthusiasm,” he said to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The Biancocelesti have their destiny in their hands with the derby and the match against Napoli in the last two rounds.”

Crespo was complimentary about the surprising success of Coach Stefano Pioli and some of the stars of Lazio’s season.

“Pioli is really good at managing the group,” he said.

“I also really like [Antonio] Candreva. We were together at Parma during his most difficult period. In the shower one day I told him: ‘You have the means to become a real player. It depends only on you succeed’”

“Lotito and Tare deserve a round of applause. [Lucas] Biglia was captain of Anderlecht, but has improved and now he’s a complete player – good going forward and defensively.

“Felipe Anderson has incredible statistics this season, but I want to wait until next season to say that he is world class as then there will be greater expectation on him and more attention paid to him by the opposition.”

Crespo also reflected on his own time at Lazio between 2000 and 2002 and pointed to the match that left the greatest effect on him.

“When I arrived at Formello there were 7,000 people there to celebrate and then straight after we lifted the Supercoppa against Inter at the Olimpico,” he said.

“It was just a shame we didn’t win more as a team. But personally, I became top scorer and won the Silver Boot in Europe.

“I get shivers whenever I think about that 4-1 win at the Olimpico against Juventus, with two goals each from me and Nedved.”
