Igli Tare claims Lazio are 'unique' in their strategy and looks forward to the Champions League preliminaries.

The technical area coordinator of the Biancocelesti saw his team flying to unexpected heights this season as they came inches from second place, which would have given them direct access to the Champions League group stage.

Their final third place means they'll have to play two games to qualify for that stage, but the 41-year-old sounded perfectly pleased with the situation.

“We're glad to dispute these two games for the preliminaries of the Champions League,” he said, in an interview with Sky Sport Italia.

“When everybody works in the right way the results follow.

“I had faith in the quality of this team, but it was important to have the right mentality.

“At first we were brilliant, but came short in terms of results.

“Then we did well to hold on, because we knew that the results were going to come.”

“[Coach Stefano] Pioli? As I said a few days ago when we extended the contract, we talked about the future for a long time, alongside the President too.

“He's delighted to continue his adventure here with Lazio.

“Things have been done very transparently, out of respect for our supporters among other reasons.

“The path that Lazio are following is different from that of other teams in Italian football.

“The work that Pioli did with his staff is proof that with a little money and a ton of ideas you can reach important results.”

Lazio are likely to be hindered in their transfer operations by their upcoming Champions League qualifier, and Tare recognised the challenge.

“That's why we played the derby with a view to winning it, even though everybody said a draw would be sufficient.

“We wanted to walk into the Champions League from the main door. This didn't happen, but we're happy anyway.

“Any team that comes up against us will have to worry, because they'll be up against Lazio.”

Tare also had the opportunity to comment on Antonio Candreva's chipped penalty in Italy's Euro 2016 qualifier against Croatia yesterday evening.

“I sent him a message to congratulate him after the game.

“I also told him that sometimes a thing like that can get you hospitalised!” he joked.

“I'm pleased because a move of that kind shows that you've got personality, and as long as it works out well, everyone's happy.

“I'm happy for him and for [Marco] Parolo, another Laziale who started for Italy yesterday.”
