Lazio have replied to José Mourinho, who had accused the Biancocelesti of beating Spezia with a late offside goal.

The Portuguese coach was fuming after Roma‘s 0-0 draw against Bologna yesterday and during his post-match press conference, he also mentioned his city rivals accusing them of having secured a 4-3 win over Spezia with an offside goal.

“Another thing that never changes is that 22 years ago, you could win a match with a goal that is offside and you can still do it today. Yesterday, a team won a match with a goal that was offside,” Mourinho said.

Lazio’s reply came in the late morning through an official club statement.

“The fact that in 2022, an opposing coach repeatedly mentions other clubs and presumed referee errors and that, at the same time, journalists of proven football faith get worked up about the same matter, forgetting about their professional role and impartiality, proves two things,” the club said.

“That Lazio is obsessively in their thoughts, more than other ambitious targets and that, as it usually happens, they look at someone else’s home to divert attention from failings or incredible incidents, in their favour, that occurred under everyone’s noses.

“Despite the necessity to evolve the image of Italian football, some protagonists are stuck to accusing VAR and referees and too many times, lack of respect towards officials and lack of journalistic objectivity aren’t enough considered.

“Lazio can’t accept criticism and institutions and believe that values are proven on the pitch, not on TV. Lazio will never be the excuse for somebody else or a scapegoat and will take action in the appropriate fora.

“The club continue to avoid comments on decisions taken on the pitch, even when incidents against us occur.

“That’s the case of Sandro Tonali’s foul on Francesco Acerbi in Lazio vs. Milan or Roger Ibanez’s elbow on Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the return leg derby, just to name two.

“Decisive episodes which we didn’t comment on, out of respect for referees and VAR, respect that others don’t have.”

Both Lazio and Roma have 59 points after 35 Serie A games and have missed out on a Champions League placement, given that Juventus are ten points ahead of them with three games remaining. They have won one derby each this term.

Both the Giallorossi and the Biancocelesti have not secured a European spot yet, being four points ahead of Atalanta with a game in hand.

If Gian Piero Gasperini’s men beat Salernitana tonight, they’ll leapfrog Fiorentina in seventh place.

  1. I’m a Chelsea fan so I don’t care much but don’t forget Lazio getting away with a stonewall penalty and red card when a Genoa player was 1v1 with the goalkeeper and got tripped up and some how Lazio got away with the red card the penalty and nothing was talked about agin, even the highlights of this were taking out!! Pretty obvious I’d say good call Jose

  2. Hahaha I write a legit comment and you refuse to post it, so it seems like you pick
And choose as long as it fits your agenda!! I’ll post on my Twitter how you guys do this and tag you in it!!

  3. Don’t forget about the Genoa game, where Lazio got away with a stonewall penalty and red card, and somehow nothing was done, with views showing clearly that the Genoa player was tripped up

  4. Funny how the referee and the VAR were all suspended!! So maybe take down your joke of a statement LAZIo

  5. Lol the referee and VAR referee has been suspended until season end because of this incident. What else you want to say?just be a man and admit it if you’re wrong

  6. So what if the ref gets suspended…why involving lazio for his mistake..lazio had always suffered from wrong decisions..so this time we benefit why not

  7. Why are Lazio trying to qualify for Europe when they always fail badly they know exactly what euro qualifications means but always moans that they can’t play 2 games a week
That’s why ill be supporting Atalanta, Roma and Viola,
    definitely not Lazio

  8. The Europa League paradox is so bizarre. Why does any team bother to try to qualify for the Europa League when playing in it negatively affects their chances of qualifying for the next season? The target is Champions League but invariably you get in to the Europa League then get disrupted by being in the competition and so struggle in the league to qualify for Champions League and qualify again for the Europa League… and so the strange cycle goes on…

  9. So now that the referees responsible for allowing this offside goal have been suspended till the end of the season are Lazio going to issue another statement? “Erm, ok maybe it was offside” ha ha ha ha ha
