Pepe Reina has surprised Lazio by choosing to terminate his contract, leaving them with no first team goalkeepers.

The Spaniard’s contract, which was officially due to expire yesterday, was automatically renewed for another year once the Biancocelesti secured their spot in European qualification in the season just gone, and the club expected him to stay for one final campaign as the backup option.

As detailed by Sky Sports Italia, Reina surprised Lazio by deciding not to stay for the extra year, terminating his contract. This has left them with no first team goalkeepers now, as Thomas Strakosha’s contract expired yesterday.

The Roman club are now working hard to try and sign a new goalkeeper before next week’s pre-season training camp in Auronzo di Cadore. They were heavily linked with a move for Atalanta prospect Marco Carnesecchi before deciding to change their focus on Empoli’s Guglielmo Vicario instead.

Lazio are also likely to search for a veteran to play the backup role as well, with tentative links to Salvatore Sirigu.

  1. Ciao Reina, home sweet home. Vicario will be new n.1 keeper for Lazio, he was one off the best keepers in Serie A last season. 2nd keeper probable will be Sampdorias Falcone or Spezias Provedel.
