Former Napoli star Ezequiel Lavezzi will retire from professional football at the end of this year.

Lavezzi’s contract with Hebei China Fortune expires on December 31, but it will be his last in football as he played in front of the club’s supporters for the final time on Wednesday.

Although his side lost 3-1 to Guangzhou Evergrande, fans showed their appreciation with a banner that read: “Legends never die, they’ll never be forgotten.”

The attacker, who turned 34 in May, is best known for his five-season spell with Napoli between 2018 and 2013.

A firm favourite at the San Paolo, he scored 48 goals and provided 57 assists in 188 appearances, winning a Coppa Italia.

Lavezzi also won four Ligue 1 titles with Paris Saint-Germain and scored nine goals in 51 Argentina caps, reaching the 2014 World Cup Final and taking Olympic gold in 2008.
