Inter striker Lautaro Martinez discussed his admiration for Argentina star Lionel Messi ahead of their crucial World Cup clash with Mexico.

The Albiceleste’s shock 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in their opening game leaves them at serious risk of being eliminated in the group stages. A defeat to Mexico this evening would seal their fate and confirm their exit from the World Cup, which would be one of the biggest surprises in decades.

Lautaro did found the back of the net in that Saudi Arabia loss but his efforts were chalked off for offside.

Speaking to InterTV, Lautaro commented on his role model and the similarities between Argentinian and Italian football.

“I choose Messi, because I play with him and as a child I used to watch him on television. To start playing alongside him was a dream.

“Argentine football is quite similar to Italian football, I realised that when I arrived at Inter. There is great passion here.”

The 25-year-old Lautaro has been on form for Inter this season, scoring eight goals and providing six assists in 21 appearances across Serie A and the Champions League. He’ll be desperate to make an impact at the World Cup, which will be the last for Messi.
