Lautaro Martinez increased his poor record from the penalty spot, leading Inter fans to question why Romelu Lukaku is not given this task in future.

The Argentina international stepped up in this evening’s game against Spezia, only to see Bartlomiej Dragowski make the save.

It means Lautaro Martinez has now missed four of the eight penalties he has taken since the start of the 2021-22 season.

In Europe’s top five leagues, only Karim Benzema of Real Madrid failed to convert more – five out of 17.

More importantly, Lautaro Martinez has converted only 11 of his total 16 penalties for Inter, as four were saved and one hit the upright.

On the other hand, Lukaku has a perfect record from the spot for the Nerazzurri, burying all 16 attempts.

It was noted by some that Lukaku was waving his arms at the Inter bench just before Lautaro Martinez stepped up, asking why he wasn’t getting the chance.

The decision to keep Lautaro Martinez as the first-choice penalty taker is therefore raising questions on social media from fans irritated with Simone Inzaghi’s hierarchy.

Hakan Calhanoglu sometimes takes them too, but he is rested this evening.
