Lautaro Martinez reiterates that Inter have gained ‘maturity’ under Simone Inzaghi after thrashing Salernitana 4-0 and he is ‘not worried’ about the contract extension.

This was a simple night at San Siro for the Nerazzurri, who were already 3-0 up by the break thanks to goals from Marcus Thuram, Lautaro Martinez and Denzel Dumfries.

They also hit the woodwork twice, forced a series of saves from Guillermo Ochoa and Marko Arnautovic tapped in with the last kick of the game in what was a one-sided match against rock bottom Salernitana.

“We approach every game the same way, sometimes it works from the start and sometimes it gets tougher, but we always try to press high, recover the ball quickly and score lots of goals,” Lautaro Martinez told Sky Sport Italia.

This was his 125th goal in the Inter jersey, breaking away from Mauro Icardi in the all-time charts, and he became only the third player to score 20 goals in three consecutive Serie A campaigns for the Nerazzurri.

However, the Argentina international always said the Capocannoniere title is nothing compared to team trophies, especially now that he is captain.

“Absolutely, I experienced lifting the Supercoppa in Riyadh and that is a moment I will always hold with me. Now we have an important objective ahead of us, we must remain humble, working every day and playing the way we did tonight.”

Inter are now 10 points clear of Juventus at the top of the Serie A table and 11 away from Milan, with all of them having played 24 games.

“We always have our destiny in our hands. During the experience with this coach, we worked so hard on gaining maturity, and now we step onto the field aware of our own strength, eager to show it in every game.”

The Champions League Round of 16 first leg is coming up against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday and Inter do not see themselves as underdogs at all.

“As we said after the Champions League Final, this is a very strong team and we work to hold Inter’s flag high.”

Beppe Marotta said before kick-off that there is no hurry to finalise Lautaro’s new contract and the striker agrees.

“As the director said, we are on the right track, there are some details to be sorted out and that is not a simple matter, but there are two and a half years left on the contract and there is no rush. I am not worried.”
