Lapo Elkann, the brother of Agnelli family head John Elkann, reflected on Beppe Marotta’s departure from Juventus and suggested the club ‘need strong and capable figures’.

Marotta spent eight years with Juventus from 2010 to 2018, playing an instrumental role in their return to the top of Italian football and domination across the decade. He left the club for Inter in 2018 and helped them win the Scudetto in the 2020-21 season.

In the five years since Marotta’s departure from Juventus, things have started to grow increasingly chaotic off the pitch, with the club now being embroiled in various legal disputes due to their alleged financial malpractice.

Writing on Twitter, Elkann first reflected on Juventus’ current issues and where things started to go wrong.

“Juventus have lost A LOT after Marotta left. In my opinion we need strong and capable figures from the world of football, beyond those who are there today. If not, it is unthinkable to bring JUVENTUS back to the highest levels, this for me is a fact.”

A fan then suggested that Elkann needed to move on and start looking ahead to the future, prompting him to clarify his words.

“I mean that after him came the difficulties and we need serious people like him who understand football at the right time to relaunch JUVENTUS when the time comes, and I hope as a fan it will be soon.”

Finally, Elkann responded to the Juventus fans who are not keen on the idea of Marotta returning in the future.

“I mean Marotta or people of depth like him who understand football.

“Enough drama, I’m simply saying that we were wrong to send him away in my opinion, and if you wanted to make the Super League you needed many more teams and all done openly with constructive discussions, without going to war with the system.

“This is my humble opinion.”
