Lafferty was unveiled as a Reggina player for the first time yesterday, having signed a two-year contract with the Serie B new boys.

The Northern Ireland striker helped Palermo win promotion to the top tier in 2013-14, and he is ready to repeat that achievement in Calabria.

“I’m absolutely delighted to get this opportunity to play for a great team like Reggina,” began the 32-year-old.

“I have to thank the President for giving me the opportunity. I think everyone will know from my time at Palermo that I’m a fighter and I’ll do everything to get this team into Serie A.

“I think until now I’ve had a successful career, I’ve won titles in numerous countries, but it’ll take a big injury to get me off the field.

“I’m a team player, I’ll fight until the end and I’ll never throw in the towel. I always wear my heart on my sleeve.

“I only really talk to maybe one or two players, Samir Ujkani, he’s a close friend of mine when I played at Palermo, but the language barrier is a bit difficult.

“I think Reggina is a great club and I think everyone agrees they should be in Serie A, so to get the opportunity to win another title and play in Serie A is exciting.

“I’ve always wanted to come back to Italy. I enjoyed my time here with Palermo, I had a successful season. Italy’s a place I enjoyed and the football was good as well.

“I always had the idea to come back at the back of my mind. I’ll be everywhere on the pitch, I’ll do whatever the team need me to do.

“Although I’m seven years older, I still feel fit, the fittest I’ve been for maybe 4-5 years, so you’ll still see popping up in areas of the pitch, helping the team in defence, although I’m here to score goals.

“I had a look at the squad, there are some big players here and it excites me, knowing I have good players around me that will help me score goals and help the team as well.

“Reggina and I want the same outcome, we want to get to Serie A. I’ve seen the team train, every single player’s willing to put in the hard work.

“We’ll fight until the 90th minute and we’ll do everything we can to get the three points. Then at the end of the campaign, it’ll be Reggina top of the league.”
