Jesse Marsch “didn’t understand” why Red Bull Salzburg’s first goal against Napoli was ruled out but accepts “we paid for the gulf in experience.”
Napoli eventually came away from Salzburg with a 3-2 win in the Champions League last night, but the match could have panned out differently if VAR had not disallowed Erling Haaland’s early finish.
“Our opponents were strong and the game wasn’t easy. We weren’t very aggressive,” Marsch said after the game.

“Our opponents were strong and the game wasn’t easy. We weren’t very aggressive,” Marsch said after the game.
“I don’t understand why our first goal was ruled out. I think it should’ve stood. We had a good performance, but Napoli were smarter and showed their experience.
“We’re young and we knew already that, so we paid for our gulf [in experience]. We need to improve at this level.
“We made too many defensive mistakes and we need to find better balance, but you always suffer against a team like Napoli.
“We’re still alive in the group. We must use these games to grow. The match in Naples will be decisive for qualification, so we’ll go to San Paolo to win!
“Napoli were dangerous on the field, but we also created so much. Giving everything for 90 minutes is always difficult, but we lost the match in the penalty area.”
