The deal with investment firm CVC Capital Partners that the Serie A clubs rejected has now been taken up by La Liga in Spain, worth almost €3 billion.

A similar proposal worth €2.7 billion had been offered to the Lega Serie A in October 2020, but was voted down by the clubs, starting with Juventus.

In April, Torino President Urbano Cairo accused Juventus President Andrea Agnelli of ‘sabotaging’ the talks because he was also working behind the scenes on the European Super League project.

At least 14 of the 20 Serie A clubs had to vote in favour for it to go ahead, but they only managed to reach 13.

Now the same investment fund, CVC, has sealed a similar deal with La Liga, buying up 10 per cent of a new media company for €3 billion.

Barcelona and Real Madrid are believed to be against the idea, but it remains to be seen if they can convince others to vote against it.
