Montella's Sevilla were beaten 2-0 by Valencia in what was viewed by many as their final opportunity to mount a challenge to finish in the top four of La Liga this season.

The result means the Rojiblancos are now 11 points off the Champions League qualification places.

Italian Coach Montella has presided over five wins, a draw and five defeats in the League since replacing the sacked Eduardo Berizzo.

In midweek, they face Manchester United in the second leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Seedorf's Deportivo went down 2-0 at Girona as their future in Spain's top-flight became ever more precarious.

With 10 matches of the season remaining, the Galician side are second-bottom of the table, five points shy of safety.

Since the former Milan midfielder's appointment as boss on 5 February, Deportivo have scored just one goal and taken only two points from six League games.
