The Nerazzurri have also secured Atletico Madrid defender Joao Miranda over the last couple of days, so this expenditure is bound to result in a big sale.
According to CalcioNews24, the man to be sacrificed is Kovacic, who has long been a target for Liverpool.
The Croatia international struggled to find his position under Roberto Mancini and with two midfielders coming in, he’s likely to be pushed out.
Inter hope to get around €28m (£20m) plus bonuses for Kovacic, who is still only 21 years old and already has 18 senior caps for Croatia.
Liverpool have a five-year contract lined up for the player.
The only other midfielder who could make way is Fredy Guarin, but he wouldn’t command as much of a transfer fee.
Inter have already fallen foul of the Financial Fair Play rules, but as they are not qualified for Europe this season, they have an extra year to balance the books.
