Mateo Kovacic admits last season was ‘difficult’ but believes Inter are ‘strong’ this season.

The Nerazzurri finished eighth in Serie A last season, but have invested heavily in the summer as they seek to return to being Scudetto contenders.

“I’m still lacking a trophy,” Kovacic told Inter Channel.

“Juve have won for the last few years, but now we’re strong. We have a lot of young players who are ready, and some experienced lads too.

“We can slowly work our way back up, we’re working to have a better season than the last two. Last year was difficult for me, but in the end I went back to playing, so that’s ok.

“This is a great League, because there are a lot of strong teams. Juve, and also Roma are the strongest.”

The Croatian international also discussed his role in the team, revealing he could play in the ‘Pirlo role’ as a deep-lying playmaker.

“I played there a lot of times under [Andrea] Stramaccioni. It’s more difficult, because you have to be more careful, but I can do it calmly.

“I need to improve on the defensive side, but I feel good alongside the other midfielders. I can also be moved to the left, the position isn’t a problem.

“We work with the Coach [Roberto Mancini] every day, and I’m learning. I’ve improved a lot in the last few years, not only in football, but as a person.

“In Croatia we worked with the ball, but not on tactics.”
