Mateo Kovacic says he wants to stay with Inter, following reports today that a new contract had been agreed upon.

Reports this morning indicated that the Croatian playmaker had agreed a new deal with the Nerazzurri, keeping the former Dinamo Zagreb player at San Siro until 2019, with the player’s wages increasing to €2m per season.

Speaking at an event for the clothing store Brooks Brothers, Kovacic stopped short of confirming any agreement, but admitted that he wants to stay with the Beneamata.

“The renewal? We’re still talking about it,” Kovavic told assembled media.

“I feel good, and I want to renew, but I already have a contract until 2017.

“Could I leave for a big club? Inter are already a big club, and now we have a new project and a new Coach [Roberto Mancini].

“You can’t create a new team in six months, it takes two or three years. Today’s Inter is not like the Inter of 2010, but we hope to return to those levels.”

The 21-year-old midfielder also discussed the impact of Mancini, and insisted that he doesn’t mind if fans expect a lot from him.

“I’ve never felt pressure, I’ve always enjoyed it.

“I’m glad that the fans expect a lot from me, I expect a lot from myself.

“However, we must think as a team, everyone must make their contribution, not just Kovacic. There are also players like Palacio and Icardi who can make a difference.

“As for Mancini, I’m still young and I can learn a lot from him. I’m trying out being a winger. He’s asked me to learn another position, and this could help me.

“I’m used to changes in Coach, it happened at Dinamo [Zagreb], but it’s important for a team to have a Coach for the long-haul and I hope we can move forward with him.

“He was a great player, but he can’t change everything in two weeks.

“It takes time, in the past he did great things for Inter.”
