“We are living a strange moment, we are struggling a little bit, but we must focus on the pitch and we must do more,” the Senegal international told Radio Kiss Kiss.

“I understand fans are upset after defeats like those in Verona, but this group has extraordinary qualities and we are the first ones to be disappointed.

Kalidou Koulibaly defends Gennaro Gattuso and insists Napoli must believe they are title contenders.

“We must held our heads high and continue on this path, because it’s the right one. We want to correct the imperfections of the first part of the season and move closer to the top of the table.

“We are aware we’ve lost too many games, we must manage games better and at least draw the games we can’t win. We must have the right mentality, we have the second best defence in Serie A, but we want to have the best one," he added.

“This Napoli side is one of the best ones I’ve ever played in. There are top footballers who can make the difference anytime,” he added.

The Azzurri beat Spezia in the Coppa Italia quarter finals on Thursday to qualify for the semis where they will face Atalanta.

Koulibaly scored the opener after roughly five minutes.

“I saw the ball coming and I didn’t think about it for too long. I am happy for the goal, but it was crucial to win. Victories are important because they always bring a nice atmosphere.”

The Partenopei are set to face Parma on Sunday.

“I expect a tough game, like every match in the League. We’ll face a team that will give everything, but we need the three points more than them. We must be ready.”

Gennaro Gattuso vented his irritation at the constant reports of his imminent Napoli dismissal after Napoli’s win against Spezia on Thursday.

“The coach is always helping us,” Koulibaly said.

“He always thinks about us footballers and the staff. That’s his strength, he trusts each one of us. Now he wants to see the results and we must give everything.

“I think he has no doubts about the unity of the group. We must prove we are a top team that can fight with the best clubs.”
