Only five points separate Napoli, Milan, Inter and Atalanta at the top of the Serie A table, but each one of them is dealing with injuries that could affect their title race.

Napoli seem to have the worse situation with Victor Osimhen and Zambo Anguissa out for several weeks.

Yesterday’s match against Sassuolo gave Luciano Spalletti even more cause for concern as Lorenzo Insigne sustained a slight calf injury, while Fabian Ruiz and Kalidou Koulibaly were forced off the pitch due to muscular problems.

Spalletti suggested that both the defender and the midfielder may not recover in time to face Atalanta next weekend.

Napoli fear Koulibaly could be out for 2-3 weeks

La Dea sit fourth in the Serie A table and have collected 13 points in the last five matches.

They have Robin Gosens and Matteo Lovato out of action.

Gosens was supposed to return by the end of the year, but he will remain on the sidelines until January at least. He suffered a new injury in training earlier this week, so his return to action has been postponed.

Serie A champions Inter have Stefan de Vrij on the treatment table, but Simone Inzaghi hopes to recover the Dutchman for Saturday’s match against José Mourinho’s Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

Milan: Kjaer stretched off with suspected knee injury

Inzaghi has little options at the back as Andrea Ranocchia and Matteo Darmian are also injured and won’t be available for at least two weeks.

Last but not least, Milan are waiting for Simon Kjaer’s medical examinations this morning. The Dane suffered a knee injury against Genoa yesterday night and Stefano Pioli admitted being ‘worried’ by his physical conditions.

Mike Maignan and Fikayo Tomori have returned to action, but Davide Calabria remains on the sidelines with Olivier Giroud, Ante Rebic and Samu Castillejo, so Pioli’s options in attack and defence are limited ahead of their next match against Salernitana.

4 thought on “Kjaer, Koulibaly and more: injuries affect Serie A title race”
  1. Inter’s strength comes from their injury record. They have barely had any serious injuries to key players in last two years even though some like Brozovic, Barella, their defenders and Handanovic almost always play.

  2. These things go in cycles. Under Mazzari and Mancini half of Inter‘s players used to be out. Under Mancio for two seasons Inter were top until this time of year until Juve’s superior depth proved decisive. There was even talk of hiring a coach (cannot remember who) just so he would bring his fitness coach. I would also point out that Milan and Napoli developed these injury problems once Inter (& Atalanta) closed the gap. Hell, Inter may even have won the 2020 championship if Batman didnt injure his hand and there was no capable replacement. My point – all sides suffer from injuries at some stage.
