Milan defender Simon Kjaer spoke about his experience with Denmark at the Euros and stressed he’s ‘not a hero’ for helping Christian Eriksen, who collapsed against Finland. ‘I just did what I had to do’.

The Denmark captain spoke about the experience at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, when Inter midfielder Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest in the final minutes of the first half.

Kjaer: ‘A shock that will be part of me forever’

Kjaer was praised for his decisive actions to help his teammate previously said it was a ‘shock that will be part of me forever’.

But in an interview with Corriere della Sera, the Milan centre-back claimed his actions were not heroic, but necessary in the moment.

“I’m not a hero, I just did what I had to do, without thinking, like anyone else would,” Kjaer told the newspaper.

“It was a historic day for all of us Danes, the first match of the European Championship, in our home stadium.

“Then what happened, happened. I was ready to remain lucid, like all my teammates. It was a team effort, obviously we would have done the same if he had been an opponent.

“That’s all. The only thing that matters is that Christian is fine now. That’s the only important thing. I did it without thinking.

“Instinct guided me, and I did what I had to, automatically. It was the first time this happened to me, I hope it’s the last too.”

  1. Just as they say ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ the same goes for spotting a hero. Kjaer might not see himself that way, but to the rest of us that see someone step up and do the right thing when needed, you’re a hero.

Even more so I thought the juxtaposition of it added to the story. Two national-team mates, but had been opposing forces for the previous months competing for the Italian title.

Good luck to Erikson, bravo to Kjaer.
