The Milan defender was praised for his actions to help the Inter midfielder, but Denmark seemed set to exit the competition when they lost 2-1 to Belgium in the second game of Group B.
But a remarkable 4-1 win secured a place in the last 16, where the Danes overcame Wales with a 4-0 win and tomorrow Kjaer and his teammates play Czech Republic in the quarter-finals in Baku.
“Not even in my dreams could I have imagined the support we had in this European Championship,” Kjaer said at a press conference. “On and off the pitch.
“We enjoy it, and it gives us players a good feeling also heading into the next match. It’s difficult to imagine that we will relive such a thing in the future.”
