Former Juventus assistant Angelo Alessio has been sacked as coach of Scottish side Kilmarnock.

The 1-0 loss to Ross County on Saturday proved to be Alessio’s last game in charge of Killie, who are currently 20 points behind League leaders Celtic in the Scottish Premier League.

Despite that, he leaves the team in a respectable fifth place, having been forced to rebuild over the summer following the exits of several key players.

“The Kilmarnock Football Club Limited can today announce that Angelo Alessio has been relieved of his position as coach,” the club said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Everyone at the club would like to thank Angelo for his efforts during his time with Kilmarnock and we wish him every success for the future.”

The 54-year-old refused to follow Antonio Conte to Inter, instead taking the reins at Kilmarnock in June.

However, he made a disastrous start at the helm as the side crashed out of the Europa League first qualifying round to Welsh minnows Connah’s Quay Nomads.

He had three years left on his Killie contract.
