The Dutch 26-year-old moved to Roma in July 2017 but didn’t convince in his first seasons at the Olimpico.
He was loaned out to Feyenoord in 2019-20 but has managed to establish himself as an important member of Paulo Fonseca’s first team this term.
The right-back recently renewed with the Giallorossi until June 2025 but admitted he hasn’t shown his ‘true level for three years’.
The defender spoke to Dutch TV channel Ziggo Sport and explained he would love to secure a place in the Holland squad.
“Many around me expected a call,” Karsdorp said. “They told me that the call-up would come.
“Even in Rome they thought so. But I never really thought about it.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m a player who always aims for the best and going to the national team would have been great, especially ahead of the European Championship.
“But there are other players in my role and above all, I haven’t shown my true level for three years.
“Now, I’m going back to being the player I was, but I have to keep working like this to deserve it.”
Karsdorp has played 33 competitive games for the Giallorossi this term, helping them qualify for the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
But the Dutch defender will not be available to play in Amsterdam today, due to a yellow card suspension.
