Former Milan star Kaka was ‘sorry’ that Italy would not participate in the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, but noted that it should be a lesson for Italian football.

The Azzurri suffered a disastrous 1-0 loss to North Macedonia in their play-off match in Palermo last month, knocking them out of contention. Italy have now missed two consecutive World Cups, meaning they’ll have to wait until 2026 for their next shot.

Speaking to Rai, Kaka commented on Italy’s failure to qualify for the tournament in Qatar.

“I’m sorry that Italy are out, a World Cup without Italy is a shame but it’s an alarm for Italian football.”

Azzurri coach Roberto Mancini has confirmed that he will remain in his post following the play-off defeat, overseeing a probable overhaul ahead of the next major tournament, Euro 2024 in Germany.

A number of Italy stars are expected to be phased out of the squad in the coming months, including veterans like Giorgio Chiellini and Lorenzo Insigne. The failure to qualify for the tournament has divided fans, with many excuses and reasons pointed to in an attempt to explain the disaster.
