According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli could join Juventus as a free agent, even if that could mean see Matthijs de Ligt leave.

Romagnoli is available as a free agent at the end of the season as his €6m-a-year deal with Milan expires in June.

Juventus are long-time admirers of the 26-year-old who joined Milan in a €25m deal in 2015.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan are unwilling to offer Romagnoli the same salary and Juventus are keeping a close eye on the situation.

The Bianconeri are on excellent terms with the player’s agent Mino Raiola and the same can’t be said of Milan after the Gigio Donnarumma saga.

However, Juventus are trying to lower their wage bill and would not offer Romagnoli a higher salary than his current one.

The Old Lady may have a limited budget to sign Romagnoli and a move also depends on De Ligt’s future.

According to the report, many top clubs knocked on the Dutch defender’s door last summer, but Juventus didn’t want to sell.

However, his agent Raiola has recently refused to rule out De Ligt’s Juventus exit in the summer.

The former Ajax man will have a €150m release clause included in his contract from the end of the current campaign.

La Gazzetta dello Sport wrote that ‘nothing can be taken for granted’ regarding De Ligt’s future, so Juventus have already identified some possible replacements, including Romangoli.

16 thought on “Juventus to replace De Ligt with Romagnoli?”
  1. As a Juve fan, this isn’t such a bad idea you know. Of course I would be disappointed but being realistic De Ligt is never going to stay in Italy long term, especially if Juve do not show signs of rapid improvement.

The proceeds would help the club financially and help rebuild the team; we would also get a fine, young but experienced defender on a free.

There is so much Italian talent at the moment and personally I would like to see Juve invest in these lads and give them the platform to get even better.

However, Chiellini and Bonucci will not last forever, so maybe, if the rumour is true, plan to pair Romagnoli and De Ligt for the long term?

  2. This is a bad idea.

If Romagnoli was any good, Milan wouldn’t want him to leave so easily. Romagnoli showed promise as a youngster but sadly, he has not reached that potential.

    Wrong move.

  3. Of course de Ligt could stay here long term – Juve is not a stepping stone, but a point of arrival. Best of the best. I hope the likes of Milan and Inter follow suit asap (again, I’m referring to “long term” as I know Juve need to improve their position in the table). Serie A needs them at their best (plus Napoli, Roma, Fiorentina, Atalanta and Lazio, too), to fight off Premier League clubs. I see another problem, though, and it’s called Mino Raiola – that’s why I don’t expect de Ligt to stay for more than a few seasons. Adding Romagnoli would improve the bench, nothing more.

  4. No offence to no one intended here:
Coming from a Rossonero, Romagnoli is not a top class defender. He shouldn’t be playing for a club who is fighting for top 4 (let alone play in the Champions league).
He never was a leader, just the fact that he was young, italian, left footed and joined Milan early reminded people of Maldini. He has no composure, no awareness, no distribution, no leadership, poor positioning, decent tackling, mediocre in the air.
If he goes to Lazio, it could be ok if Lazio want to remain a top 6 team. But to step to the top 4, I would not want Lazio get him. Better take that 6 mil salary and invest in some better younger ones.
For Juve, if they want and can afford, he should be got just as a back-up to be played against Salernitana/Verona etc (even then its not a sure bet).
English players get a lot of heat (rightly) that the media hypes them up for them being English and when they come from big cities and are young. But Italy is not too far either. Florenzi, Romagnoli are just two blaring examples of guys that were “decent” at some point but were hyped to be top class, cause of where they came from etc.

  6. This could be a deal of the year. Milan will get rid of the player, that they dont need anymore, Juventus will save some money, Raiola will earn some money, De Ligt will get new adventure with better team than Juventus. So everyone will be happy.

  7. Was this not the reason why they signed Romero and demiral, long term replacements for chiellini and bonnici.

    How’s that going

  8. I hate criticism, few years ago Rossoneries were singing romagnoli song has the most reliable and dependent defender in milan squad. This rejected stone could be the heart of Italy’s defence in near future. Let him go to academy where Italy defence is built juventus. I like him and I believe he can improve. Fonza milan

  9. I have seen improvement in Romagnoli. I think he is good enough to start but his play is really still scrutinized based on past performances and because he is Italian he faces even more criticism. I’ve seen foreign defenders in the serie a make so many mistakes but keep their starting positions and avoid the same kind of criticism. It would be a good signing for Juve because at worst he might become a valuable member of their depth chart but also for Romagnoli himself who will learn from the guys already at Juve

  10. Good against weak teams, goes missing against quality opposition. Maybe Juve can rediscover the promise he showed earlier in his career.
Certainly not worth anything near 6m though. I would have thought that Juve would have learnt the dangers of free agents with Rabiot and Ramsey. They can cost you in the long term.

  11. The only person who truly benefits is Raiola on transfer fees. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Donnarumma show up as well, but the cost will be De Ligt, and of course massive agent fee to Mino

  12. I would sell De Ligt if crazy PL clubs want to offer over £100 million. The problem is this club seems to be digging an even deeper hole which is no longer surprising. Talks of extending Bernadeschi’s stay, Dembele for free and now a slow defender who has lost his place at Milan. The dumbest thing was letting Romero go to Atalanta and allowing them to take all the profit. Moggi and Marotta made this club great. Now it is being operated by clowns.
