The former defender played for both clubs, and is a Neapolitan, so he was asked for his opinions on Friday’s meeting between the two clubs.

“It’s an opportunity for [Coach Maurizio] Sarri because having Juve seven points behind would be a big advantage,” Cannavaro pointed out, speaking to Corriere della Sera.

“It’s not just a two-horse race though. Quietly, quietly, Inter are entering the fight. Not playing in Europe helps them, it’s like [Antonio] Conte’s first Juve.

“Juve have a crazy squad, one of the strongest in recent years, but always changing to try and find the best solution can be a problem. After three years [with Sarri] Napoli are playing by memory.

“For the squad he has, [Bianconeri Coach Max] Allegri remains the favourite. But Napoli are learning to win ugly, in the games where they don’t shine like in Udine.

“What has affected Juve? Losing [Leonardo] Bonucci and [Giorgio] Chiellini having some problems. When [Benedikt] Howedes returns things will improve.

“In the end the best defence always wins.”

As Coach of Guangzhou Evergrande, Cannavaro was asked what he’d take from each Coach, as well as Inter’s Luciano Spalletti.

“From Sarri his concept of play. In the lower leagues it may have been exhausting, but with players of quality it makes a real difference.

“From Allegri the ability to find the right solution in moments of difficulty, and from Spalletti I like the way he transfers his ideas to his players, in training and in the matches.”
