Juventus’ solid defence could be key in top 4 fight

Whilst Juventus have struggled to find the back of the net this season, their solid defence could make the difference in the race for the Champions League spots.

The Bianconeri have only conceded 17 goals in the opening 19 games of the season, less than both second place Milan and fourth place Atalanta, and coach Massimiliano Allegri is well aware of the importance of a solid backline.

As highlighted by Tuttosport, Juventus have only conceded one goal in their last six matches, coming in their 1-1 draw at home against Venezia. Clean sheets have been kept in wins over Cagliari, Bologna, Malmö, Genoa and Salernitana, a sign of their defensive solidity.

Goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny has produced a number of result-saving saves in recent weeks and he has been helped by an in-form Matthijs de Ligt, who has neutralised a variety of attacks this campaign.

Allegri, who is often noted for achieving 1-0 defensive victories, will be hoping that the team keep up this consistency, which could prove decisive as they look to retain a top four finish this season. For now, they are four points behind Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.
