Juventus-Salernitana: VAR room could not see Candreva

The Italian Referees’ Association claims that the VAR room couldn’t see Antonio Candreva in the action that saw Arkadiusz Milik’s winner for Juventus ruled offside against Salernitana.

The Bianconeri thought they’d scored a last minute winner against the Campania side in their edgy league clash last night, before the goal was chalked off due to an apparent offside.

Milik was shown a second yellow card for taking his shirt off to celebrate, a baffling decision regardless of the call, and the bitter pill was even harder to swallow when images began to circulate showing Candreva apparently playing Leonardo Bonucci onside.

Following a technical review, the Italian Referees’ Association has suggested that the VAR room overseeing the Juventus-Salernitana clash could not see the camera angle which appeared to show Candreva keeping Bonucci onside.

Below is the AIA’s statement in full:

“With regard to the Juventus-Salernitana incident, a video released at the end of the match, first on the web and then taken up by many media outlets. The technical body of CAN has viewed all the images made available by VAR for the match in question, finding no correspondence with the video in question.

“The technical body of CAN also expressly asked the company that provides the technological service for VAR if the camera in question, defined as tactical, was available to the VAR officials for the match played at the Juventus Stadium.

“The answer that was given was that the camera was not available to VAR and therefore could not be used by the referees. With this we are convinced that we have clarified the incident.”

Understandably, Juventus fans are furious at the situation, although other supporters have suggested that the team shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place.

The incident was not clear immediately after the full time whistle as broadcaster DAZN suggested that Lega Calcio had confirmed that the offside lines had been used taking Candreva into account. Later, Sky Sports Italia posted a video countering this, and DAZN rolled back on their previous claim, confusing onlookers.
