Juventus paid tribute to the 39 people who died in the Heysel stadium disaster on the tragic event’s 37th anniversary.

On May 29, 1985, 39 Juventus supporters were killed following the collapse of a wall before their European Cup final in Brussels.

Their statement read: “When the mind is cast back to the tragedy that occurred at the Heysel Stadium on May 29, 1985, on the night of the European Cup Final between Juventus and Liverpool, one is struck by conflicting emotions.

“There are the memories of those who were there that evening and who have been unable to watch a football match through the same eyes because those events in Bruxelles day mark a watershed moment.

“There is the disbelief of those who may not even have been born yet, but when they look at those images, they find it hard to believe that a disaster on that scale could actually have happened at a football stadium.

“Then there is the ongoing drama of the thirty-nine families that saw their lives change that fateful night. The families of the victims, to whom we will forever embrace, in thought and in memory, today and every day.

“Because Heysel is a memory that lasts – and must last – forever.”

The incident took place before kick off with Juve fans attempting to escape after Liverpool supporters had breached a fence which had separated them from a neutral area.

Despite the tragic events, the match was still played with Juventus winning 1-0 thanks to a Michel Platini penalty. It was their first European Cup success but one which was difficult to enjoy given the circumstances.

UEFA banned English clubs from European competition for five years following the incident which was described as the competition’s “darkest hour” while Liverpool were suspended for a further year.

The two teams met in the Champions League 20 years later, in 2005, and Liverpool fans help up a banner which read “Friendship.”
