This is not the worst start to a season Juventus have ever had in Serie A, but they have never managed better than fourth after losing four of the opening 11 rounds.

The Bianconeri could end the weekend 16 points off top spot following back-to-back 2-1 defeats to Sassuolo and Hellas Verona.

Since returning to the bench after a two-year absence, Max Allegri has overseen four Serie A victories, three draws and four defeats.

This is the same start to a campaign had in 1941-42, in 1968-69 and most recently in 1970-71.

In all those cases, Juventus never finished higher than fourth place.

It’s not even their worst start, because they had four defeats already by Week 10 in 1961-62, by Week 9 in 1938-39 and again in 1987-88.

The most dismal opening tally was four losses in eight games in the 1948-49 campaign, yet they recovered to secure fourth place.

However, it is worth noting that in all those cases, Serie A was still operating under the system where teams received two points for a win and one for a draw, rather than the current three at a victory.

  1. The article is wrong. Juventus in the 15/16 season had a similar start after 11 rounds (4 wins, 3 draws and 4 defeats) and they ended the season as champions. There should be more fact checking before posting an article.

  2. That was a different team and the other big clubs were in transition. If they were in or playing clubs at the calibre of the premier league they would be legitimately relegated. Watford and Brighton could beat them and dominate.

  3. Exactly – Juve beat CL holders Chelsea and are comfortably out of the CL group too.
And all the top teams in Serie A are about to be eliminated from CL, even Atalanta that plays more like an English attacking team. Watch, Juve will go deep in the CL and end up in derby 4, that’s not bad and that is exactly what will happen. As a bonus Juve will rescue Donna out of the cliquish PSG they will have to for them and Azzurri.

  4. The 1-0 win against Chelsea was an anomaly, if we are honest Juve play that match again 10 times and they lose 9.

They will do nothing in the CL, as they have no identity, personality or consistency as a team.

Players lack confidence and badly out of form.

    Get your popcorn ready.

  5. Where is I love Marco Branca? He was always on here saying Inter were in 9th place during the long transition years? Just goes to show that football like almost everything in life goes in cycles. Chins up decent Juve fans, Juves cycle will probably be shorter than most.

  6. ha ha ha these Juventus fans crack me up. They are using the Chelsea game in a group match as their measuring stick. Ajax, Lyon and Porto, not even in the QF, that is the guide. If Chelsea were facing them in the knock out rounds it would be totally different as Max would have every man in the trenches from first rising to sun down.
