Juventus keeper Wojciech Szczęsny apparently struggled to breathe and was forced off the pitch in the first half of the Old Lady’s Europa League quarter-final clash against Sporting CP in Turin.

The Poland goalkeeper needed medical attention at minute 42. He repeatedly touched his chest before speaking to his teammate Gleison Bremer who urged Juventus medical staff to enter the pitch.

The former Arsenal keeper always remained alert while talking to Juventus doctors who, after a short while, informed coach Massimiliano Allegri that the 32-year-old could no longer continue playing.

Szczesny was therefore replaced by Mattia Perin. The Poland keeper was able to leave the pitch on his own but looked quite worried given that he walked off in tears.

He briefly spoke to coach Allegri before entering the tunnel at the Allianz Stadium. Sky Sport Italia claims Szczesny struggled to breathe, so he had to be subbed off.

He will likely undergo further medical examinations to understand the nature of his health problem.

UPDATE: Good news – Szczesny underwent an ECG at the Allianz Stadium and it came back negative.
