There are reports that the big three clubs Juventus, Inter and Milan are in favour of reducing Serie A from 20 teams to 18.

The proposal was mentioned by FIGC President Gabriele Gravina as part of wider reforms to change Italian football and make it more sustainable.

The Lega Serie A and the majority of the clubs currently involved are against the idea, but the verdict is by no means unanimous.

According to reports, Juventus, Inter and Milan stepped up during today’s assembly of Serie A clubs and put their backing behind the reduction to 18 teams.

It is probably no coincidence that these were also the three clubs who had been involved in the European Super League breakaway project before it collapsed.

This would reduce the number of fixtures in an already packed season and enable the top flight clubs to divide up the cash between them more effectively.

Serie A had 16 teams from 1967-88, expanding to 18 in 1988 and then to 20 sides in 2004.

During the same meeting today, Lega Serie A President Lorenzo Casini announced the start of a process to evaluate whether they could set up a more autonomous system following the Premier League model to break away from the FIGC.
