Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero said the impending returns of Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba to Serie A could great for Italian football.

Roma‘s victory in the Europa Conference League was the first continental success by an Italian side since Inter‘s Treble victory in 2010.

Only Juventus – twice – have reached a Champions League final in that time and only one Italian team has reached the semi-final since 2017

Asked whether a player like Lukaku struggling in the Premier League and thriving in Serie A is indicative of the difference between the two leagues, ESPN pundit Del Piero said: “Now the Premier League is the best football you can see in terms of number of teams that can perform at a high level and what happened in the Champions League, in the Europa League how they performed is the answer.

“It’s a different kind of sport in some moments. It seems in the Premier League you run more, you have more physicality, you are more spectacular. It’s not exactly like this because in Italy we have this kind of thing but Italy is struggling now: the national team and also in the club teams.

“So last season showed a little bit more. Roma’s win [in the Europa Conference League] is a good hope for the future in the Europa competitions. So Lukaku for Inter and Pogba for Juve could be a great move also for Italian football to become again stronger and have a voice in the Champions League especially. “

However, since Milan’s victory in 2007, there have only been three Italian teams in the final and only one victory.

Parma’s UEFA Cup success in 1999, coupled with Lazio’s Cup Winners’ Cup triumph in the same season, was the last time prior to Roma’s victory in 2022 that an Italian side won Europe’s secondary competition.

  1. No it’s not, a league that can’t move on and develop, god the mindset in Italy is pathetic

  2. Also, if the contract for Pogba really is for 4 years, oh boy. That’s going to look like an albatross in year 3 and 4.

No reason why Juve cannot bring along Fagioli and Rovella.

  3. Del Piero needs his head examined.

How is bringing in a waster and a flop from the epl a “could be great for Italian football” scenario?

It makes Serie A look like a dumping ground for epl rejects and a league that sells its best players to it too.

Then again, that seems to be the height of Serie A’s ambitions nowadays – to become a feeder league to England and live off that.

  4. Because a player flops in one league but succeeds in another, doesn’t mean the second league is a “feeder” or garbage. That’s ridiculous

  5. Agree with Brandon. Develop players. The national team is now in transition and needs the italian clubs to support and provide talent. Stop restricting development for also rans and used to be awesome players. Develop…develop…develop and win both for club and country!

  6. Now they want De Maria.

The player clearly wants Barca. This is what Serie A has become. Getting these players past their best.

  7. @Come on man.

I didn’t say it was a feeder league BECAUSE one player flops in the other. I just said it’s a feeder league to the epl – and nowadays, it is.

Strange how many people are still in denial of Serie A’s place in Europe.

  8. You’ve all forgot about kulusevski and Bentancur pretty quick. Who’s the feeder league again? Look at utd with Ronaldo & Cavani.
