Reports in France suggest it was Paris Saint-Germain chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi who blocked Blaise Matuidi’s move to Juventus.
Bianconeri general manager Giuseppe Marotta met with PSG’s sporting director Patrick Kluivert at the Champions League draw on August 25 to try and work out a deal.
After their summit, Marotta declared himself “optimistic” about signing the French international, but Al-Khelaifi then insisted that Matuidi would stay.
According to L’Équipe, the reason for the mixed messages is that Kluivert had agreed to sell Matuidi to Juve, only to be overruled by Al-Khelaifi.
This could perhaps be the "dynamics between player and club" which Marotta alluded to yesterday.
The Turin side then turned their attentions to Axel Witsel, but that deal also collapsed and the Serie A champions were left without a replacement for Paul Pogba.
