Juventus fans were right to celebrate Ronaldo’s departure

Ralf Rangnick’s latest criticism of Cristiano Ronaldo is yet another sign that Juventus fans were right to celebrate his move away from Turin last summer.

The Portuguese star forced a move away from the Bianconeri near the end of last summer, and a move to Manchester City seemed to be on the horizon before he eventually returned to Manchester United. Whilst his return to England started well, things have started to slow down now for the 37-year-old.

Rangnick was not afraid to speak out about Ronaldo and the issues with his other forwards, saying recently that “It’s not only about Cristiano Ronaldo. That we should score more goals, it’s obvious. We created enough chances in the last couple of games but we just didn’t score enough goals. This is not only an issue with Cristiano – it’s an issue with other players, especially with the offensive players, we don’t score enough goals.”

It’s no secret that Ronaldo’s contract represented a significant financial burden for Juventus, and his departure in the summer allowed them to make the statement signing of Dusan Vlahovic last month. The Serbian is expected to kick off the post-Ronaldo era in Turin and so far he’s proving his value.

Yes, Ronaldo scored 101 goals in 134 games for Juventus, but he didn’t lift the Champions League trophy wearing black and white, and last year he didn’t even lift the Scudetto. The Portuguese star’s departure from Turin came at the right time for both parties, and now Juventus can continue looking to the future, starting their new cycle with Vlahovic at the helm.
