Juventus’ upcoming fixtures with SC Freiburg in the Europa League Round of 16 will be the first time they face a German side in the competition in over 25 years.

Juve and Freiburg have never previously played each other in a competitive match. This is already the furthest stage Freiburg have ever reached in a European Competition.

The last time Juve were drawn against a German side in Europe’s secondary competition was against Borussia Dortmund in the semi-final of the 1994-95 UEFA Cup.

Marcello Lippi was in charge of the Old Lady at the time and goals from Sergio Porrini and Roberto Baggio secured a 2-1 victory on the night and a 4-3 win on aggregate.

Juve’s star-studded line-up that evening also included a midfield pairing of Antonio Conte and Didier Deschamps, whilst a 21-year-old Alessandro Del Piero partnered Roberto Baggio up front.

Juventus went on to lose out to Parma in an all-Italian final that year, following a 1-0 loss and 1-1 draw in the first and second leg, respectively.
