Juventus posted record losses last week and transformed strategy, which could mean letting high earners Angel Di Maria, Juan Cuadrado, Adrien Rabiot and Alex Sandro leave as free agents.

The Old Lady set a new all-time Serie A record by confirming the 2021-22 financial year ended with the club making a loss of €254.3m.

That is even more than Inter last year at €245.6m and a significant increase on Juve’s 2020-21 losses of €209.9m.

It all points to the need for a change of strategy and the Juventus chiefs are going to focus more on bringing young talent through their youth academy to play for the senior squad.

That will also allow them to slice down the massive wage bill and the first step in that approach was already evident over the summer when Juve withdrew their contract renewal offer for Paulo Dybala, letting him join Roma for free instead.

More of these scenarios are to be expected, as talks with €5m per season Cuadrado to sign a new low-cost deal have come to nothing, while Rabiot and Alex Sandro are also on track to be released as free agents in June 2023.

Alex Sandro, often criticised by fans for his performances, earns €6.5m per season net, while Rabiot is the club’s second-highest earner on €8m.

As for Di Maria, the Argentina international made it clear when arriving for free from PSG that he only wanted to remain for one season, returning to his homeland after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

It still means the contract, which reaches €7.5m with bonuses, will terminate and free that cash to buy a replacement.

  1. Totally agree DrLobo. No point going for a youth strategy when you have a manager who can’t develop players.

  2. In the CL, every victory lands a team €2.8m while a draw is €0.93M. Sack him win 3 CL games and get even.
