Bologna were furious for not being awarded a penalty kick against Juventus on Sunday and according to DAZN pundit Luca Marelli, the incident is in the ‘top three of worst VAR mistakes.’

The Rossoblu were leading 1-0 in the second half when their winger Dan Ndoye was taken down by Samuel Iling-Junior with a tackle in front of an empty net. However, neither referee Marco Di Bello nor VAR official Francesco Fourneau spotted the potential penalty kick infuriating Bologna players.

DAZN referee pundit Marelli offered his view on the incident on Sunday night, confirming that Bologna should have been given a penalty kick while Juventus winger Iling-Junior should have been sent off for DOGSO, an obvious goal-scoring opportunity.

Marelli could not explain how VAR didn’t even see the incident and blamed Fourneau more than on-the-pitch referee Di Bello.

“I don’t remember many incidents like this in the past,” said Marelli.

“Maybe one involving Andrea Ranocchia and Andrea Belotti in TorinoInter. This is obviously a huge error, I think it’s in the top three mistakes made in the VAR era.”

The former Serie A referee confirmed that neither the referee nor VAR thought Iling-Junior’s tackle was worthy of a penalty kick.

  1. Lol, seriously?
It was a shoulder to shoulder challenge for the ball and nobody got to the end of it.
    Absolutely no penalty.
