Juventus director Maurizio Arrivabene clarifies he was joking when he asked a fan if he’d pay for Max Allegri’s replacement.

A video shared on Twitter today showed the Juventus director taking selfies with Bianconeri supporters after an institutional lunch with Benfica directors in Turin.

At some point, Arrivabene says: “Then you pay for who comes next?”

The question can’t be heard in the video, but it allegedly referred to Juventus potentially sacking Allegri.

“Let’s make things clear. When I left the restaurant, a fan shouted that we should sack Allegri if we don’t win and I replied with the first joke that crossed my mind. It’s ridiculous to create a case for something like that,” Arrivabene told Prime Video ahead of Juventus-Benfica at the Allianz Stadium.

“That’s how football should be taken sometimes and have a laugh.”

Allegri returned to Juventus in 2021, signing a four-year deal worth €7.5m plus add-ons. Last season, the Bianconeri completed their first trophyless campaign in 11 years and the Tuscan boss has been criticised for his defensive playing style which didn’t bring results.

Juventus have won two of their opening six Serie A games this season and lost the opening Champions League fixture against PSG last week.

Arrivabene was also asked which was Juventus’ transfer strategy this summer.

“We made a high income with De Ligt. Every club has its own strategy. Ours was to bring in experienced and technical players and combine them with the three youths we presented last week.”

  1. McKennie who is out of inspiration at all when he has the ball, yet playing regularly…Kostic must learn how to play himself usefully..Fagioli should be given more trust to start against lowly opposition…Paredes is being over confident…Cuadrado is exhausted physically mentally playing too frequently

  2. PhD Max needs to be given a contract for life and the keys to the city. The next humiliation for the minnows of Europe will come at the hands of Maccabi Haifa. The last time the 7/9 scored from open play must have been decades ago.

  3. Allegri to be sacked with immediate effect, also Agnelli, Nedved and Arrivabene should respectively resign they’ve all failed us.
