Gianluca Di Marzio claims the release clause was a key point in the negotiations and the main reason PSG failed to complete the transfer several weeks ago, as these are limited by the French rules.

At the same time, reports in France and Spain suggest Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona decided not to prepare a new offer for the defender, believing the 19-year-old already has his heart set on Juve.

Today, Voetbal International published quotes from De Ligt that are over a month old, but which confirm his fondness for the Bianconeri.

“I was talking to some childhood friends and we recalled I always wanted to be Cristiano Ronaldo when we were playing football in the garden.

“My first football shirt was also Ronaldo’s from that time.”
